I have a confession to make, I watch reality TV. My husband and I have our staples that we like to watch, Big Brother, Survivor, X-Factor, The Amazing Race, Celebrity Apprentice, but I’ll turn other reality shows on in the background while I’m doing things around the house. One thing I’ve learned while working in Hollywood is how staged, “scripted” and “un-real” many of these so-called “reality” shows actually are. The thing that actually bothers me most is the message that some of these shows spread about girls and the drama between them. If you watch a reality show with girls in it, chances are, there is going to be fighting between them and bad talking behind each other’s backs. These “reality” shows are spreading a very real message that girls are “catty” and find it hard to get a long.
I had the best time at New York Comic Con last weekend and one of the main reasons why, was because I got the chance to catch up with several of my Fangirl friends. Girls hanging out with girls, having a genuinely great time, being supportive of each other, caring about each other, celebrating each other and there wasn’t an ounce of drama or fighting. Seeing so many of my fellow fangirls made so happy and the mutual support we had for one another was truly infectious. I got to catch up with Amy about her engagement and future wedding, Tricia about her new novel, AJ about school, Regina, Kristin and Molly about their new show, Kristen about her new job in PR, Cambria about her new job, Jenna about her new boyfriend and kitten, I got to spend time and go to a panel with Bonnie, I got some amazing bracelets from Megan, bonded with Lily over cupcakes, introduced Cat to her first NYCC, got to say a quick hello to Lorraine, chatted about The Mary Sue and their amazing party (that I sadly missed) with Jill, had a lovely heart to heart with Chase, chatted about kids and anti-bullying issues with Carrie, exchanged a heartfelt wave and hello with Jane, geeked out over Ahsoka and cosplay with Allison, appreciated the support from my girls Meghan, Erin, Jaime and Kate, experienced baby’s first convention with Anne and Lulu, got two amazing hugs from Shea, followed LeAnna’s con on Instagram, enjoyed seeing all my girls from DK, was truly inspired by Alice, was so excited to finally meet Sam, shared candy corn with Rachel, finally met Johnamarie, admired Nicole’s Darth Vader dress, loved Cory’s Han Solo fashion cosplay, caught up with Kristen about Star Wars and life, complimented Carrie’s dress, saw Alison and chatted about fashion and her adorable dress, did an interview with Olive, Amy and Rebecca, had breakfast with Risa, talked to Anne about Steampunk and I talked to many, many more girls who came up to the shop to say hello and support Her Universe. This is just the short list of all of the amazing women I had the priveledge to interact with.
The positive energy between all of us Fangirls was just electric. There was no drama. It was a community of girls looking for friendship and and support. It was the ultimate girls weekend! My weekend at NYCC was the REAL reality show!
