Wow! Where has the time gone? Two weeks have flown by since San Diego Comic Con 2011 and I am just sitting down to write about it. It's been a little crazy though. Lots of work, travel, meetings and moving have taken up the better part of the two weeks, but I hope to have some really exciting news to announce soon!
First things first, I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out and supported Her Universe at San Diego Comic Con. The biggest difference between last year and this year is that people actually knew that Her Universe existed, and they would come and seek us out. The support was overwhelming and I cannot thank everyone enough! It's always a bit surreal to me when people actually know about Her Universe, and to have such a concentrated amount of supporters in one space was amazing!
For me, Comic Con got off to a great start when we had our second annual Her Universe panel at SDCC. The panel was called “What Women Want In Their Female Sci-Fi Heroes.” It's very important to me, that we not only create merchandise made exclusively for female fans but that we also have discussions that are important for female sci-fi fans. This topic is close to my heart because I have read so many complaints from fangirls who are frustrated with the classic damsel in distress and they lamented that they would write a female character differently if given the chance. As the voice of Ahsoka Tano (who I feel is a female character done right, yes I'm a little biased ;o) I thought we needed to have a discussion about what women are looking for in a strong female character. We had an AMAZING group of panelists! I could go on and on about the wonderful things that they had to say but I will let you listen for yourself. Check out our video of the panel below and go to our Flickr page for pictures from the panel.
As usual there were some amazing costumes at Comic Con! I asked girls to stop by our booth to show us their costumes and, as promised, I said that we would post them on our site. Check out all of the great costumes on our Her Universe Flickr page!
Now to the new products! We unveiled several new products at SDCC and now they are also available online. Several of you have had questions about the sizing of the new merchandise and while, designer commentary videos are coming, here are some tidbits.
Star Wars Outline Burnout– This shirt is our new version of last years burnout, except we just burned out the outline of the Star Wars logo. We used the same garment as the other burnout, except it is an eggplant purple color. It's SUPER soft. The sizing note on this shirt is that it runs a bit small. Most girls go up one size in this shirt, unless you like the shirt tight/fitted, in that case buy your normal size.
m/Products/Yoda-Tee__HUN-YODA-TEE.aspx”>Yoda Shirt- This shirt is so beautiful in person! Similar to the Padme shirt, there is so much going in in this beautiful piece of art. This shirt runs true to size. It is covered in distressed, silver foil and is best to wash/dry inside out. This shirt also comes in plus sizes.
Skywalker Shirt- This shirt is also SO beautiful in person! It almost looks 3D and it's amazing to see all of the OT characters in one piece of art. This shirt is fitted, so if you like the shirt to be fitted buy your size, it you like it a bit roomy go up one size. It is also covered in blue distressed foil and it's best to wash/dry inside out.
Boba Fett Underwear Set– This was very popular at San Diego Comic Con! However, one thing to note on this set, it runs small. We use American Apparel underwear for this set and for some reason they run very small. Please don't get mad at me for the sizing, I had nothing to do with how they are made. I just tried to find the best quality underoo style underwear and American Apparel had the best quality. Please keep in mind that most women go up at least one size when they buy this set.
BSG Red Spine Shirt– This shirt was very popular at Comic Con! It runs true to size. This v-neck garment is very flattering and it also comes in plus sizes. This shirt has red foil covering the spine and is best to wash and dry inside out.
BSG So Say We All Hoodie– This item was very popular at San Diego Comic Con. We use the same garment for our Star Wars Manga hoodie, but obviously, this one is heather gray. This hoodie is SO SOFT, and I am not trying to give you a sales pitch. I am actually wearing this hoodie right now as I type this and it has become a staple in my wardrobe. This garment runs true to size. Don't miss the hidden pocket for your cell phone or ipod inside the right front pocket and the hole for your headphones.
Sharktopus Shirt– Many people were surprised, yet excited to find that we were making these shirts. The Syfy original movies are very popular and Sharktopus was the winning monster from Syfy's Monster Madness competition. This shirt is very cool in person. We used a distress technique on the printing and it looks like an old movie poster. This shirt is fitted, so if you like it fitted, buy your size, if you like it a bit roomy, go up one size. Same goes for the guys shirt.
Leena's Bed and Breakfast Shirt– This shirt is very subtle but perfect for any Warehouse 13 fan! I spent the weekend catching up on season 3 of Warehouse 13 and I get excited whenever they show this sign for Leena's B&B on the show. This shirt is for the insider, for the day that you want to show off that you are a fangirl but you don't feel like being a walking billboard. The shirt is SO soft! It's fitted but runs true to size. It's also pretty long, which I like, and is a beautiful teal color. Give this shirt a chance, you won't regret it!
Now it's time to finish my pizza and watch Big Brother. Again, I want to thank EVERYONE for your continued support. I had a blast in San Diego! I'll leave you with a fun picture of me and my dear friend Phil LaMarr!
