Name of the Fangirl: Megan
Fangirl’s Occupation: Resident Assistant for Japanese University Students
What is her fangirl interest?
I love Science Fiction, Fantasy and pretty much any combination of the two, but honestly, all I need to become obsessed is a good story, strong characters and a personal connection to the ideals or feelings portrayed.
Biggest Obsessions: Doctor Who (Classic and New), Star Trek (Next Generation is the personal fave), Supernatural, Firefly, Torchwood and Sherlock.
Honorable Mentions: Orphan Black, Harry Potter, Gundam (all of them, but the Wing series is my personal favorite), Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
Most of the time, people don’t seem to believe I am the fangirl that I am because of how I look.
When I walk into any kind of shop specializing in the fandoms I’ve come to love, most men will tell me that I am much too pretty and “normal” looking to be in the shop and afterwards ask if I am lost. They always mention that pretty girls are never, and can never, be into it all as much as they are. Doesn’t matter that I was raised on Star Trek and have an immense knowledge of the Sailor Moon universe, because they never ask. They just assume on impulsive stereotypes the kind of person I am.
Just because I don’t have a Y chromosome doesn’t mean I am not as big a fan as anyone else. My whole life this strange little battle has taken place, and I will forever hold my ground as a proud fangirl who isn’t afraid to show a man (or anyone) just how much a fan I really am. No matter if I am in a cosplay costume, no matter if I am walking down the street showcasing my Doctor Who t-shirt and Star Trek earrings, I will never be ashamed of who I am or feel less that because of how I was born.
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
I express my fandom by strutting (more like actively trying not to fall over) myself down the catwalk of life in my many fandom t-shirts (Doctor Who, Star Trek, Arrested Development, Sailor Moon) driving around in my Cardis (with Doctor Who license plate cover), going to conventions dressed as characters from video games and my favorite anime, as well as just cosplaying with friends around the city I live in.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
My Tenth Doctor sonic screwdriver.
