Name of Fangirl: Mary
Fangirl’s School Grade: Esthetician and Makeup Artist
What is her Fangirl interest?
Mary has been on a Star Wars terror recently, devouring the Clone Wars, and obsessively worrying about the fate of her loved Ahsoka Tano.
But Marvel Comics are in a close second. The rise of strong, female characters has reignited her love for the comics, leading to a growing collection of the new Ms. Marvel, Thor, and Black Widow comics.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this Fangirl?
Mary has been fighting off Multiple Sclerosis for the last 4 years, but the disease keeps making progress, so now we pull out the big guns: Chemo.
Her first dose was today (Monday) and she’ll be getting another dose every day this week. It’s a pretty aggressive treatment, but Mary is doing her best to keep her spirits high. So today, she donned her Yoda “Do or do not, there is no try.” shirt and faced her worst fear: Being a “sick girl.”
Mary has embraced the wonderfully nerdy part of herself, the part that says it’s okay to fight with foam swords at Target or to get in a debate with a perfect stranger about which superhero would win in a fight. These parts of herself, so long ignored, have flourished in recent years. And now, no longer ruled by fear, she flaunts her love for all things dork, and is all the happier for it.
She has found strength, not only from the media she loves, but also from the community that loves along side her and the peace of loving her whole self.
Today, Mary owns more everyday cosplay and Fangirl threads than I could hope to keep up with. In fact, we are supposed to dress in complimenting dorkness for the duration of her treatment, but I honestly don’t know if I have enough clothes…
So, in short, I decided to nominate Mary because, to her, being a Fangirl is not just about representing the brand, but also about the strength the brand represents in her.
How does this Fangirl express her fandom?
Mostly in the form of a closet brimmed with Fangirl threads. Be it Marvel or Star Wars, Mary could wear an everyday cosplay at least once a week for a year without doubling down.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
“If you don’t like it, don’t look.” Love what you love, be who you are, and don’t get in the way of other people doing the same.
What is her favorite Fangirl item that she cannot live without?
A recently acquired necklace reading “Darth Mellow”
It’s mostly an inside story, but the gist is pretty clear.
