Name of Fangirl: Marisa
Fangirl’s Occupation: Respiratory Therapist
What is her Fangirl interest?
Pacific Rim, Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Tabletop gaming, reading, Doctor Who, The Guild, Firefly, and The Hobbit.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this Fangirl?
Being married to a military guy, it is really hard to make friends with my husband and I constantly moving and even harder to meet people with similar interests (sci-fi, fantasy, gaming). I have managed to find a few close friends and I have created two different online groups on Facebook for people with like interests to get together and freely express our interests with one another. It’s nice to have these people around for when I move to another state or country and don’t know anybody…and it’s always nice to have them for when I feel like no one else understands me or my interests. A few of the other women that help run these groups with me are military spouses as well, so these groups help them in the same way.
How does this Fangirl express her fandom?
I express my fandom in so many ways. My husband and I are avid shirt buyers on those one sale a day sites, so we are always wearing shirts that show off our fandoms. I also cross stitch and embroider a lot, so I have made many things in those two mediums from Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Firefly, Pacific Rim, and The Hobbit. I even embroidered a pair of Doctor Who shoes that were displayed in a museum in the UK for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who last year.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
My favorite quote about being a geek or fangirl is the one from Simon Pegg! Anytime someone mocks me for my interests, these words always pop into my head!
“Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.”
What is her favorite Fangirl item that she cannot live without?
As weird as it sounds, it would have to be my husband. I know it’s not really an “item” but he is one that got me into all the things I love and he is the only person that makes me feel completely and 100% unashamed for my interests. He encourages everything I love and makes me feel beautiful because of them. He is one of the few people that I can totally be myself and not hide who I am. He supports me in everything I do and is always eager to show me new things. He has opened my eyes to so much and I love him more and more each day for it. He is my Fangirl rock and I could not live without him.
