Name of Fangirl: Maria
Fangirl’s Occupation: Journalist
What is her Fangirl interest?
Everything! Movies, comics, fantasy, books, sci-fi, horror, podcasts, animation, geek art – she’s genuinely nuts.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this Fangirl?
In Australia, geek culture is even more on the outs then in most other countries – we only have a few minor conventions each year and there’s only a handful of comic book shops in the whole country – but Mazz is proudly flying the geek flag. I reckon she’s probably the biggest fangirl in Australia and I’m always amazed/slightly freaked out by her amount of bizarre pop culture knowledge. Comics, TV shows, movies – she’s devours it all. Plus, she’s an aspiring geek novelist and just got through to the next round in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest with her horror novel. Like I said, FANGIRL.
How does this Fangirl express her fandom?
She flew herself all the way from Australia to San Diego Comic-Con in 2011 – a lifelong dream, which she covered for horror movie website Bloody Disgusting. She has rad purple hair and I swear to God everything she wears – EVERYTHING – has nerdy stuff on it: Batman dress, Captain America shoes, Pac Man earrings, Spider-Man hairclip – it’s nuts.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
“When a man hits a target they call him a marksman. When I hit it they call it a trick. Never did like that much.” – Annie Oakley
What is her favorite Fangirl item that she cannot live without?
An action figure of Mark Wahlberg’s character from Tim Burton’s remake of Planet Of The Apes (still in the box, of course). She spent years trying to track one down.
