Name of the Fangirl: Jolyn
What is her fangirl interest?
Star Wars (Leia & Mara Jade!), Star Trek: TNG, Battlestar Galactica (all the female cylons, but especially Sharon), Firefly/Serenity (Inara & River), Doctor Who (Amy Pond & River Song!), Farscape (Aeryn Sun is amazing), and finally Buffy the Vampire Slayer because Buffy is the first feminist in genre TV.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
Female sci-fi fans can come in all ages, all sizes, and all types. Ever since I first saw Princess Leia firing a blaster at Stormtroopers when I was 3 years old, I knew I was hooked on finally finding someone I could relate to in this genre. She is my hero, someone I looked up to and wanted to be… a true princess who fell in love but still took charge.
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
I go to sci-fi conventions and I’m on the staff at Gallifrey One, I’ve cosplayed, I collect figures and DVDs and all of Ashley’s clothes! I just bought an 8 year old the “Self-Rescuing Princess” shirt because there is a lack of female clothes for SW fans (especially girls). It was very disheartening to go shopping and see that birthday cards were all pink and princessy, while boy birthday cards were about robots and action. Why can’t little girls get to have the fun, too? Why are we trapped in these gender tropes?
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
A tie – “So Say We All” and “May the Force Be With You”.
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
I own the replica of Buffy’s Scythe that she used in Season 7 of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, and it’s up on my wall. It makes me feel empowered! That, and River Song’s Sonic Screwdriver that the Tenth Doctor gave to her. I’m currently waiting on a Mara Jade lightsaber to be made…
