Name of the Fangirl: Gloria
Fangirl’s Occupation: Engineer
What is her fangirl interest?
I love sci-fi – especially Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and Babylon 5.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
I’m a woman breaking into a man’s world in both my interests and my career. Growing up, sci-fi wasn’t really a girly thing to like, but that never mattered to me, and it still doesn’t. I like what I like, and I’m proud of it! There’s not many female Engineers around, but that didn’t stop me from going after what I’m passionate about. Where I went to college, there wasn’t even a ladies room in the hallway where the Engineering labs are because the building was built in the 50’s. But the numbers of fangirls and female Engineers are growing now, and I’m so proud to be part of that movement!
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
I love to wear my Her Universe t-shirts out in public. Most people don’t understand, but there are some who do, and that makes me feel great! I also quote Star Wars and my favorite sci-fi-shows all the time at work. I had a colleague e-mail me recently to say he was going to try to get something done for me. Of course, I replied “Try not – do or do not.” His reply back was a link to a website of signs you are a nerd 🙂
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
I absolutely love this quote from Simon Pegg – “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.”
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
My Mara Jade Gentle Giant bust – it’s one of my most prized possessions. Mara is my favorite Star Wars character ever – she’s so amazing!
