Name of the Fangirl: Amy
Fangirl’s Occupation: blogger, editor
What is her fangirl interest?
Star Trek (Captain Janeway!), X-Files, Lost, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, The Big Bang Theory, Falling Skies, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Game of Thrones, and of course Harry Potter and Star Wars.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
I’ve been a fangirl since the age of 7, when I discovered the epic world of Star Trek. Since then, I’ve loved sci-fi with the passion of a thousand burning suns. I’ve managed to turn this passion into a creative outlet by writing for a friend’s blog, Open The Fridge, and now my own blog, Shoes & Starships! I recently was a panelist on the Women in Star Trek panel at Star Trek: Las Vegas, representing women who love genre and discussing feminism in Trek.
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
I love to express my fandom through my collections, my blogging, and the way I dress! Just because you love fun and girly things like shoes and fashion doesn’t mean you can’t express your inner geek, and I love to throw on a sneaky pair of Rebel Alliance earrings, some Starfleet command red-and-black, or my Dharma logo sweatshirt. I’m pretty much ready to geek out at any moment!
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
“One voice can be stronger than a thousand voices.”- Captain Janeway
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
I would be devastated if I lost my binder of autographed photos – I have met nearly every Star Trek actor and quite a few from my other sci-fi loves! Extreme sadness would also occur if you took my piece of the Galactica that I won on eBay – it was auctioned after the end of the series and both Edward James Olmos and Michael Hogan have signed it. I also have a pair of simple black boots that I affectionately call my “Janeway boots” – I’ve had them since I was an awkward teen, and wearing them makes me feel like I can do anything. I’ve had them re-soled three times!
