Name of the Fangirl: Alexandra
Fangirl’s Occupation: Retail Cashier/ Web-comic Artist
What is her fangirl interest?
You name it. Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings. Pretty much anything fantasy or sci-fi related. A gamer too, playing Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and genre-blending games like Shadowrun.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
Because Fangirls come in all shapes and sizes, even some you wouldn’t expect. I’m a transgender woman, and for pretty much most of my life I was miserable, twisted up inside, and withdrawn. I struggled against this and threw myself into my interests, like my games, my books, my movies. And they kept me afloat. They, along with the help of my amazing friends, gave me the courage to do something about my misery, my pain. And here I am, nearly a year later, and I’m happier than I’ve ever been. And I’d say I’m ever more of a fangirl than ever! The gaming hasn’t stopped, and I always keep a good book (sci-fi, of course) with me wherever I go. It’s part of who I am, and it doesn’t make me any less a girl than any other nerdy girl.
So, that’s it. I’m Allie, I’m trans*, and we can be fangirls too.
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
In so many ways. Geeky t-shirts (current favorites: Loki Charms and a Legend of Zelda emblem tee!), geeking out (in the best way possible) over new and awesome-looking movies, and in my webcomic Bitz: A comic that sort of takes the seed of who I am, as a fangirl, as a transgender woman, and wraps it all up in nerdery and humor.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
“Courage lies not in the lack of fear, but in doing something you’re afraid to.”
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
My dice. So many amazing memories are wrapped around those little things…and I DO have a lot of them. Of course, the d8 is my favorite.
