Think back. Way back. What was your first fandom?
Star Wars as an 11-year old. I subscribed to the magazine, collected action figures and original pieces, saved every Taco Bell cup and read every EU book I could find. I was sure I was meant to be a part of Rogue Squadron. I memorized my SW encyclopedia. There was never enough SW information to be had. I have now found my way back to being just as passionate about the galaxy far, far away and share it with my sons. We especially love Anakin and Ahsoka, naming our chickens after them and our cat Kenobi. In junior high I wrote a poem book about SW, asking friends to come in as guest illustrators. It’s fantastic to share my old toys, now out of the box, with my son’s and watch them delight over my old friends.
How did you become interested in this fandom?
My mom thought I would enjoy the Star Wars universe as she did, so when they were rereleased in theaters in 1997 she made sure we went. I brought my recorder and taped the intro, replaying it at home until the tape wore out. I was hooked and my mom was very supportive of my passion, buying me action figures and taking a special trip to Aberdeen so I could visit a Star Wars store. When my mom died, I allowed my passion for Star Wars to be stifled, however the births of my sons renewed my excitement for Star Wars and I’m overjoyed to share it with them. We started with pod racing and never looked back.
So many fandoms. What’s yours?
While I will always be a Star Wars girl, first and foremost, I am becoming very interested in the Marvel world. Spider-Man and Black Widow are two of my favorites and I’m loving watching all the hero stories combine in the MCU. I have a deep love for Wonder Woman and the empowerment she has always displayed. My boys and I are buying comics now! I grew up watching Transformers and X-Men and find joy in sharing them with my sons. My first love letter was written in red crayon to Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’ve moved forward and in a search for the biggest book in the historical fiction section, I found Outlander. I’m thrilled to have a physical Jamie to love on screen as I have for years on the page.
