Name: Kate M.
Location: Dallas, TX
Bio: Kate is a writer with deep devotions towards books, hot beverages and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Sometimes separate, sometimes all at once. You can always find her rocking some type of Star Wars attire no matter what the day brings, because nerds are proud and loud!
How did you become interested in this fandom?
My dad was an ultra-nerd growing up and constantly made us watch the Star Wars movies. His name is Garth so we use to call him Garth Vader! (Yes, he IS my father!)
How do you subtly (or not-so-subtly!) work your fandom into everyday life?
I work for a pharmaceutical company, but wear my Star Wars dresses, shirts, earrings, etc to work every day! My co-workers think it’s hilarious when I show up for meetings in a dress with R2 on it and a suit jacket! Most of them try to find the “hidden” Star Wars item I have on every day. Sometimes I get tricky and only have a pin or necklace or socks.
What does it mean to be a fangirl?
To me, being a fangirl has meant not being afraid to be individual and stand out. I know exactly what I like and nerding out with fellow fangirls (or guys!) made it easier to make connections. I’ve had others say they respect my ability to be myself and that they were encouraged to be more open about their interests too! Unapologetically being yourself is always the best bet!
