Name of Fangirl: Cathy
Fangirl’s Occupation: Teacher (high school chemistry and forensic science)
What is her Fangirl interest?
I love so many geeky pursuits, it’s hard to narrow it down. In terms of Her Universe, I am a huge fan of Star Wars. It came out in 1977, the year I was born, and it’s been a part of my life ever since–my older brother and sister made sure of that! I even had a Han and Leia cake topper on my wedding cake in 2001, before such things became common. I’m also really into Star Trek–science! Vulcans! Also, steampunk, Stargate, Dune, Marvel and DC comics (Wonder Woman! Kitty Pryde, Nightcrawler and the x-Men). In addition, I love science passionately, being a science teacher. I will happily discuss electrons with you, or lightsabers. I am also a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy novels. My second cosplay was as a Dragonrider of Pern, and I would flip out if Ashley could get some of the Michael Whelen covers on clothes.
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this Fangirl?
I decided to nominate myself because I think the Year of the Fangirl is a great project to shine a light on the fact that you can be geeky AND female AND a successful adult. I want my son to see that the gender stereotypes of geekiness are silly and incorrect.
How does this Fangirl express her fandom?
I love dressing up for conventions. My costumes so far are:
Kitty Pryde (X-Men)
Weyrwoman of High Reaches Weyr (Pern)
Harper of Pern
Star Trek: TOS Science Leiutenant
Goa’uld (Stargate)
Jedi (Star Wars)
Lady Artemisia (Steampunk)
Medusa
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
What is her favorite Fangirl item that she cannot live without?
My Star Trek costume.
