Name of the Fangirl: Valerie
Fangirl’s Occupation: Librarian
What is her fangirl interest?
Batman, Fringe, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars & Super Mario Brothers!
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
Valerie is an amazing elementary school librarian that encourages her students, especially young girls, to let their Fangirl flag fly high! She regularly creates displays and posters in her school library promoting different comic and sci-fi franchises, including Batman and Star Wars. She loves when a young student arrives in the library excited to hear new stories from their favorite Fangirl, Ms. Val. She is also my wonderful wife and deserves to be honored for her work to promote young readers through fun and entertaining stories.
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
By day Valerie is a fun and inspiring librarian to her elementary students. By night she indulges in reading comics, sci-fi and fantasy literature, and reviewing pre-release titles for new youth fiction authors. In addition, she is a contributor to GeekyKool.com, a local website administrated by our close friend, Larry. Valerie regularly writes blogs highlighting arts and crafts with a ‘geeky’ or sci-fi influence, such as creating Superhero Bookmarks from popsicle sticks and lightsaber earrings. Lastly, she participated in a panel at the St. Louis Comic Con 2013 Wizard World Convention entitled ‘Who Are Geek Girls’. A video of the panel can be seen here.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
I have to give two here:
1) ‘All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’ – Gandalf
2) Captain Kirk: ‘There are times, Mr. Spock, when I think I should have been a librarian.’
Spock: ‘The job of librarian would be no less challenging, captain, but it would undoubtedly be less dangerous’.
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
Her Star Trek Kirk and Spock action figures!
