Name of the Fangirl: Tali
Fangirl’s School Grade: College Freshman
What is her fangirl interest?
Tali can’t even begin to express her love for Star Trek. She loves the show because she believes that it stands for much more than people realize. She believes that Gene Roddenberry created the show to be a vision of a world where war, bigots, racism, and sexists are obsolete–a world of ambitious, enterprising individuals in a quest to better themselves and their species. Her favorite character in the series is captain Jean-Luc Picard because “he’s just too perfect.”
Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this fangirl?
Tali has amazing advice for girls who are struggling with being proud of their fandoms: “You should never, ever be afraid to express your love for something and never let anyone tell you that you can’t like it because you’re a girl. Whether it’s Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, or Doctor Who, you don’t need to be ashamed of what you love. Boldly go where no fangirl has gone before!”
How does this fangirl express her fandom?
Other than the apparel and merchandise she owns, Tali endlessly watches the Star Trek episodes and the movies. Since she’ll be going to her first convention this March, she’s hoping to soak up all the wonderful geekiness and get a picture with Patrick Stewart.
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
Tali’s favorite quote is “Let the beauty of what you love be what you do” by the Persian poet Rumi. She loves the quote because, “it means finding good values in what you admire, the things that make it truly amazing, and living out those values every day. Using this quote I’ve made it my goal to spread Star Trek’s message of peace, equality, friendship, and progress into the real world as best as I can.”
What is her favorite fangirl item that she cannot live without?
Her Star Fleet Insignia Pin. She has the pin on her coat so that she can display her fandom everywhere she goes with anyone she meets. Not only that, but it’s a great conversation starter and she explained how she gets giddy every time someone recognizes it.
